von .just.I_am. am 04.01.2011 13:16Thüringen steht in den 90ern nicht gerade im Ruf einer Elektro-Hochburg. So finden die ersten musikalischen Gehversuche von Sebastian Bohn und Andreas Kubat 1997 im Heimstudio fernab der großen Medienstädte statt.
Zwischen allerlei Synthesizern, Samplern, Effektgeräten und sonstigen Spielereien reift hier allmählich die Idee, mit den eigenen Sounds den Schritt an die Öffentlichkeit zu wagen. 2000 steht mit "Small Chamber Works" das erste Northern Lite-Release in den Plattenläden und stößt allseits auf offene Ohren.
Gleichzeitig geben die zwei Thüringer Produzenten damit den Startschuss für ihr eigenes Label First Decade Records, das sich dank der gefeierten Neo Pop-Compilations schnell einen Namen macht.
Der Hype um alles, das sich nach Retro-Techno anhört, hilft Northern Lite, die Veröffentlichungen wie "Trusting Blind" oder "Away From You" Erfurt auf die Technolandkarte bringen. Kubats Gesang in Verbindung mit den groovigen Arrangements von Bohn geben eine perfekte Visitenkarte ab.
Northern Lite wagen mit der Aufnahme von Gitarrist Larry Lowe den Aufbruch zu neuen Ufern, geben ihrer Musik deutlich rockigere Ecken und Kanten. "My Pain", auf Savas Pascalidis Label Lasergun veröffentlicht, bringt das Zusammenspiel von Elektro und Rock auf den Punkt und entwickelt sich schnell zum Clubhit. Auch der Remix von The Hacker, mit der "Behind The Wheel"-Bassline von Depeche Mode angereichert, schlägt auf jedem Dancefloor ein.
Liveauftritte in aller Welt folgen, bei denen die Thüringer mit Live-Qualitäten überzeugen. Auch als Remixer sind Nothern Lite gefragt. Yello lassen 2003 ihre neue Single "Planet Dada" von den Erfurtern aufpolieren, genauso wie Peaches, die ihren Track "Set It Off" dem Trio zur Veredelung anvertraut.
Nach einer kleinen Tour, auf der sie zu Beginn des Jahres 2004 ihre Platte vorstellen, erscheint im Februar ihr erstes komplettes Album "Reach The Sun". Wie schon angekündigt, orientiert sich die Scheibe deutlich mehr an Gitarrensounds, auch wenn die Elektronik noch immer die Hauptrolle spielt.
Es folgen umjubelte Konzerte in halb Europa, bevor sich die Band wieder ins Studio verzeiht, um den Nachfolger aufzunehmen. Mittlerweile gibt es eine Umbesetzung innerhalb der Band: Der amerikanische Northern Lite-Gitarrist macht Sascha Littek Platz.
Gemeinsam mit dem Neuling nehmen Bohn und Kubat das Album "Temper" auf, das im Frühsommer 2005 erscheint. Um sich besser kennen zu lernen, gehts gleich anschließend auf Tournee, wo das QOTSA-Cover "Go With The Flow" regelmäßig das I-Tüpfelchen eines jeden Northern Lite-Sets darstellt.
Statt sich anschließend auf den Lorbeeren auszuruhen, geht es nahtlos weiter. Das dritte Album innerhalb von nur drei Jahren erscheint diesmal auf Universal und nennt sich "Unisex". Dort findet der Fan das Soundkonzept der Erfurter in noch perfektionierterer Ausrichtung wieder. Dem 13 Songs starken Werk folgt eine weitere Clubtour. Dem Rhythmus bleiben Northern Lite in den folgenden Jahren treu.
Nachdem Sascha Littek aussteigt und Valerian Herdam seinen Platz einnimmt, stockt das Trio die musikalische Besetzung weiter auf: Der Gitarrist Frithjof Rödel alias Ringo Fire kommt hinzu. Trotzdem bleiben Northern Lite ihrem Rezept treu, das clubbigen Elektro mit altbekannter knarzender Gitarre kombiniert.
