Hip Hop mit den unterschiedlichsten musikalischen Einflüssen - dafür stehen die Black Eyed Peas nun schon seit 1998. Im Sommer desselben Jahres erscheint ihr Debütalbum bei Interscope. Offiziell existiert die Band bereits seit 1992.
In diesem Jahr wird Atban Klann (A Tribe Beyond A Nation) auf die in Los Angeles ansässige High School-Dance-Crew Tribal Nation aufmerksam. Deren Mitglieder, der Filipino Apl De Ap und der Schwarze Will.I.Am, nehmen mit Klann 1994 ihre erste Scheibe für Ruthless Records auf, die allerdings nie veröffentlicht wird. Gerüchten zufolge wurde das Debütalbum von Bone Thugs-N-Harmony vom Label als veröffentlichungswürdiger empfunden.
Als auch noch Labelchef Eazy E (Ex-NWA) an Aids stirbt, haben die beiden MCs genug von Ruthless. Zusammen mit Taboo, einem Indianer aus dem Chachoney-Stamm, wechselt man mit neuem Bandnamen zu Interscope, wo Mitte 1998 das Debüt "Behind The Front" erscheint. Zwischen Künstlern wie Snoop Dogg, Blackstreet und Marilyn Manson fühlt sich die Multikultitruppe dort musikalisch gut aufgehoben.
Inzwischen erregt das Trio mit einer vierköpfigen Liveband mächtig Aufsehen in der Hip Hop-Community an der Westcoast. Unter anderem tourt man mit No Doubt. Das BEP-Motto lautet: Live-Instrumente statt Sampling. Dementsprechend präsentiert sich der Erstling: losgelöst von kommerziellen Ansprüchen verarbeiten die Peas sämtliche Genres in ihrem Style. Mit Einflüssen aus dem Soul, Old School, Latin und Funk kreieren sie einen universellen Vibe, der die meisten eingefleischten Westcoastler überfordert.
So verwundert es wenig, wenn die Band vermeldet, dass Acts wie De La Soul und A Tribe Called Quest von der anderen Küstenseite schon immer zu ihren Favorites gehörten. Mit dem typischen Bad Guy-Image wollen die drei ebenfalls nichts zu tun haben. Viel lieber singen sie über wahre Liebe und wollen mit ihren Beats Freude und Optimismus transportieren, der natürlich auch tanzbar sein soll.
Das ist ihnen sowohl auf der Support-Tour mit Cypress Hill im Herbst 2000 als auch auf dem programmatisch betitelten zweiten Album "Bridging The Gap" erfrischend gelungen. Die Gaststarriege ist dabei im Vergleich zum Vorgänger populärer ausgefallen: dabei sind Wyclef, Gang Starrs DJ Premier, De La Soul und Macy Gray.
Kurz darauf beginnen sie die Aufnahmen an ihrem neuen Album "Elephunk". Sie sichern sich die Dienste der Ex-Wild Orchid-Sängerin Stacey "Fergie" Ferguson, die sie durch Live-Gigs kennen gelernt haben. Die Chemie scheint sofort zu stimmen, so dass man beschließt, den neuen BEP-Sound um einen weiblichen Anteil anzureichern. Kurz vor dem Einstieg überwindet sie ihre Crystal Meth-Abhängigkeit.
Zwei Jahre nach Beginn der Studio-Arbeit steht das Album im Spätsommer 2003 in den Regalen. Weniger dreckig, dafür noch eine Spur eingängiger präsentiert sich das Ergebnis mit Gastauftritten von Justin Timberlake und Papa Roach. Dass die erste Single "Where Is The Love?" sofort an die Chartspitze sämtlicher Länder schießt, übertrifft sogar die Erwartungen der Westcoast-Bande.
Mit Sängerin Fergie scheinen sie einen echten Glücksgriff gelandet zu haben. Der Nachfolge-Hit "Shut Up" geht ebenfalls voll ab, während das Album in Deutschland zielstrebig die Gold-Marke anpeilt (150.000 verkaufte Einheiten). Ein Teil der Fans sieht das allerdings ganz anders: Viele lasten Fergie die immer deutlicher zutage tretende Abkehr vom unaufgeregten Hip Hop und die Hinwendung zum Dance-Pop an.
"Monkey Business", das im Juni 2005 erscheint, toppt jedoch alles bisher Dagewesene und verkauft sich weltweit über neun Millionen Mal. Im Zuge der Album-Promo gibt Apl De Ap im US-Fernsehen zu, dass seine zeitweilige und stressbedingte Speed-Abhängigkeit fast die Band ruiniert hätte. Will.I.Am und die anderen hätten ihn aber zur Reha überreden können: "Das hat mich aus der Dunkelheit wieder heraus geholt, die Drogen waren wie eine Flucht für mich."
Nach der Welttour zum Album gehen Fergie und Will Soloaktivitäten nach, was in der Presse naturgemäß zu Auflösungsgerüchten führt, vor allem nach Fergies Erfolg mit "The Dutchess". Mit "The E.N.D." kehren BEP 2009 als Quartett zurück - der Albumtitel führt alle Skeptiker ein weiteres Mal aufs Glatteis, steht er doch für "The energy never dies".
